The history of San Mateo

San Mateo, California, boasts a rich and storied history that dates back to the Spanish colonial era. The city’s name itself pays homage to Saint Matthew, as it was named by Spanish explorers in the late 18th century. The region was initially inhabited by the Ohlone people before Spanish settlers established missions and ranchos in the area.

During the mid-19th century, as California experienced the Gold Rush, San Mateo began to develop as a prominent agricultural center, with crops like wheat, barley, and fruits thriving in its fertile soil. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century further spurred growth and connectivity, making San Mateo a desirable destination for new residents and businesses. Today, remnants of its historical charm can still be seen in its preserved Victorian-era homes and downtown architecture, serving as a testament to its enduring legacy.
